Poetry Oral Assessment Task
What is Social, Cultural and Historical Contexts?
An understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts within which the poem was written, helps the reader to understand the poet's meaning. Some things that may help you to understand the contexts (influences on the poet) include:
- the life of the poet, who they are, what they have experienced;
- other poems the poet has written;
- the period in time when the poet wrote the poem;
- the place or event that inspired the poem;
- the use of language from that particular time that might not be used now;
- the culture within which the poem was written;
- the theme or setting of the poem;

Examples of Figurative Language
Figurative language is also often referred to as imagery or figures of speech. It is a literary device that writers use to make informational, argument and imaginative texts interesting and realistic.
