## Multiplying by 10, 100, 1000

When we multiply a whole number by 10, 100 or 1000 we often just choose a cheat method and add some zeros to the original number. This method works for whole numbers but NOT for decimal numbers. It's all about place value and moving the decimal point.

Practise x10, x100 and x1000 mentally by working on this activity. Work through the activities in order. Click HERE to access the activity.

Now it's time to practise multiplying by any multiple of 10, 100 or 1000. All of the following activities will help you practise this skill. Make sure you write a neat heading and the date in your Maths book. Number each question and write the question and the answer. Show your teacher when you are finished so your work can be marked.

## The Split Strategy

__Split Strategy__

Sometimes it is also known as the Break Apart Strategy. Watch this Youtube clip to see an example.

Now it is your turn to solve some multiplication problems using the Split Strategy.

Click here to access a site with 10 multiplication problems. Set each one out neatly in your book and then type your answer into the site. It will mark your work at the end. Please redo any question you got wrong. Show your teacher your MARKED work when you have finished. Don't forget to write a heading and the date on your page.

## The compensation strategy

This is a handy mental strategy to know. Watch this YouTube clip and check that it makes sense for you. Watch the first part of the video particularly closely.

Now complete your work tasks.

Click HERE to go to your activity sheet. Please write the title and the date in your Maths Pad. Please number each question you do and write out the whole sum properly. Make sure you show your working out.

If you finish the activity quickly, you can find a partner (who has also finished) and play the Multiplication Compensation Strategy Dice Game.

Click HERE to find the instructions.

You need a partner (who is also finished), and 2 normal dice.

To save paper you won't have your own worksheet, but you can copy your questions into your Maths pad instead. Once again, don't forget to add a title and today's date to your page. Keep your work neat and well set out.
